The devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake on April 25th affected 8.1 million people and has left 1.4 million in need of food assistance.
The devastating earthquake that struck Nepal demolished ancient cultural sites, wiped entire towns off the map, cut off access to many remote villages and killed more than 8,000 people.
The damage to the country’s educational system, from primary through university level, was also severe and has alarming long-term consequences.
There are more than 16,000 public and private schools – about half of the country’s total – have been damaged. More than 5000 schools were in the earthquake, putting the education of hundreds of thousands of children at risk.
Nepal’s children will need the help of the international community to rebuild 5,000 destroyed schools and repair those that have been damaged — otherwise, this disaster threatens to deprive thousands of children of their basic right to education for months, or even years to come.
Many children and their parents have continued to sleep outside, under makeshift tents or tarps, afraid of going back into their houses in case another earthquake or aftershock strikes.
Schools throughout the country are likely to remain closed for several months.
Volunteer Society Nepal plans to be involved in rebuilding the schools project by mobilizing its volunteers, resources and expertise. VSN requests its international volunteers to get involved in the project.
International volunteers who have knowledge and skill are most welcome to join the program. But, volunteers who do not have experience and skill are also welcome to join our program. These volunteers do not need any specific skills or knowledge about construction, as they will mainly be doing unskilled work such as digging, mixing sand and cement, carrying rocks, sand and bricks, fetching water, and painting the school buildings. They will be led by skilled Nepali and will work together with local people who will be providing free labour for the advancement of their communities. Individual construction programs last between one and three weeks. Volunteer Society Nepal arranges the location and logistical support, including skilled manpower, food and accommodation, training, etc.
