Volunteer Society Nepal : The best experience for volunteers, the best value for Nepal.

Hilly Region

Hilly Region: Experience the peaceful life, and volunteer in the terraced hilly region of Nepal; only a short bus trip from the bustling capital of Kathmandu

At a glance: Our two towns in the hilly region of Nepal both have health facilities. This makes them great choices for those with an interest in working alongside Nepali doctors. Additionally, being within 35km of Kathmandu, it also suits those who want a volunteering post that mixes rural and urban.

Dhulikhel: Teaching in Schools, Health (Camp, Clinic), Construction

A typical small Newari town in the hilly region surrounded by Tamang village. It is 32 km East of Kathmandu and has long been popular for its natural beauty and ancient traditions. The Himalaya mountain range from the towering mass of Mt. Everest in the east to the twin crest of Mt. Langtang in the west and you can see it on a clear day. Our volunteers often take short hikes to the surrounding villages; along the way you will walk through lush forests and come across temples dedicated to Kali. If you wake up early and climb before dawn, you’ll see a sunrise you will remember for years.

The town’s scenic position and proximity to Kathmandu make it a popular day trip destination. This means a tourist infrastructure of internet cafes and restaurants has developed. However, you will be living in a simple home stay with a pit toilet and basic facilities.

Banepa: Teaching in Schools, Health (Camp), Disabled and Deaf centres, Construction

This town is 26km from Kathmandu in the hilly region along the main Arniko highway to Tibet. The kings of the ancient kingdom of Banepa grew wealthy from their position on the trade route to China and reached the peak of their power during the 14th century. It is said that the authorities of Banepa captured several Chinese ambassadors. They were sent to meet with the rulers of Nepal, and under the pretense of being the rightful rulers of the whole Kathmandu valley they enjoyed generous gifts from the Chinese for many years.

We offer placements in teaching and construction, but uniquely to Banepa we also offer placements in a deaf school and disabled center. The town is home to the Friends of the Disabled organization who run the Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children (HRDC). This center provides the best re-constructive surgery and rehabilitation in the country, with its services primarily aimed at disadvantaged and physically challenged children under the age of 16 years.

In this town you can expect a well-appointed home stay with a flushing toilet and the possibility of a hot shower.
