Festival of Colours Celebrated with Joy

Volunteer Society Nepal recently celebrated Holi, a traditional Hindu festival. It celebrates the beginning of spring as well as the triumph of good over evil. The Women Center Nepal, Center for Children with Intellectual Disabilities and CBIA School took part in the festivities. The students, teachers, women and volunteers from Volunteer Society Nepal celebrated on Thursday, amidst much fanfare and merrymaking.

How do we celebrate the festival?

Holi is celebrated by exchanging wishes and smearing colorful powders. We throw colors and water-filled balloons at each other. Every year the festival celebrations begin on the evening of the full moon that comes in ‘Phalguna’. This is between the end of February and the middle of March, carrying on into the next day. Volunteers enjoyed finger painting, hand and foot printing on different pictures.  At the end of program volunteers danced on the tunes of Holi songs along with the students and teachers. Holi festival history

Holi revolves around the mythology of the demon king Hiranya Kashyapu. He ordered his sister Holika to enter into a fire along with Pralhad. Pralhad is the son of the demon king and a devout follower of Lord Bishnu. Holika is in her lap so that Pralhad would stop chanting the name of the lord. The catch was that Holika wouldn’t burn in the fire. This is because of a boon she had received from god. But it so happened that the fire burnt Holika. Pralhad remained unharmed and came out of the fire still chanting the name of god. Therefore, the festival has been linked to this legend and is celebrated by smearing color in enjoyment.
