Volunteering, Trekking and Getting Engaged in Nepal

For the last two months we had a special couple volunteering with us from the Netherlands. Merel and Robert are on a world tour and decided, as part of the world tour, to come to Nepal and enjoy their time volunteering and trekking. Merel works at the University in the field of education and therefore wanted to use her talents in this field.

Volunteering as a couple in Kathmandu (Urban Area)

We asked her to come and work and think along at the Talent School, the CBIA school and the women center. Merel gave workshops in positive education and observed the teachers and gave them advice regarding their teaching methods. Robert, in the meantime, helped with the construction of the Women Center.

Volunteering as a couple in Kaskikot (Rural Area)

After this Merel and Robert wanted to visit a more rural area. With our help and advice, they went to the beautiful village of Kaskikot. After seeing the moldy classrooms at the school in Kaskikot they immediately started a big cleaning and paint job. Of course, being in a village comes with different challenges than being in a city. The main challenge for Merel was the insects. The home stay host or Robert had to remove insects out of the room before Merel could sleep! Another challenge is the coordination of the painting project together with the school. Getting the materials and being able to clean and paint when the kids are not there. And lastly, making sure that the paint job does not get ruined by the local workers that put cement on the ceiling! But making friends with the people in the village, working together with the school and having beautiful mountain views made it all worthwhile!

Trekking Manaslu Circuit

From Kaskikot Merel and Robert departed to the mountains for a two week trek of the Manaslu circuit. This route is less touristy and has the best views! Half way, at the highest point Robert got on one knee and asked Merel to marry him! Merel said yes, which made this trek the highlight of their stay!

Final Goodbyes

After the trek they went back to Kaskikot, and helped with the woodwork of the windows of the school and said their final goodbyes. They were rewarded with blessings, a small statue and flower necklaces. Back in Kathmandu we could not believe they were leaving so soon and had to say our goodbyes. They are a beautiful couple who did so much for all our projects in Nepal. Thank you Merel and Robert and you are welcome to come back anytime!
