Volunteer Society Nepal : The best experience for volunteers, the best value for Nepal.

Group Experience: Volunteering at the Women Center

Volunteering in a group always turn out to be very productive and fun. As a group we always have someone to share our opinions and ideas with. As a group, we come up with various ideas and activities that can be collectively applied for getting better results.

Recently we had three volunteers Sherry, from USA and Jennifer and Candy from China who has been helping the women in the Women Center. The Women Center is one of the projects of VSN, empowering the Nepalese women through education.

Below, Sherry, Candy and Jennifer share their experiences about Nepal, Nepali people, the Women Center and Volunteer Society Nepal.

Sherry from the USA

“Hi I am Sherry from the USA. I am in Nepal for a month and I was a student of Engineering. Back in the USA, I am now a strategy manager. I volunteer at the Women Center and Talent School, helping the women and kids with their English language. Education is the most powerful tool to change the world. Therefore, I am keen in helping the people the way I can. I believe in sharing what I know and what I have learned. Along with volunteering, I am learning the Nepali language. In this way it would be easier for me to communicate with my Nepali boyfriend. I came to know about Volunteers Society Nepal through the official website. The detailed information and the instant reply from Linda further insisted me to join and be a part of VSN family. I think it was my best decision”.

Better Education for the Women

“The Nepali women are more dependent on their husband because of the male-dominated society. But if we can educate the women then they can be independent on their own. Working with the women is really fun as they are very enthusiastic and eager to learn despite difficulties. I am a quick learner and I try to adjust with the new people and the situations. So these strengths of mine always motivate me to work harder. I have been focusing on vocabulary and Grammar with the women as I am quite good at these. So, I have designed a structured course for the women of the advanced level. This includes parts of speech, which is an integral part of Grammar. I am so happy to see them work hard with a strong determination. For the women of the Beginners level, I am teaching them some basic things like names of vegetables through the help of flash cards. This technique has been very effective in making them learn new words.

Honestly speaking, I had never imagined that the works and activities of VSN would be so well organized. I was very surprised when I came here. Besides the great organization, the welcoming nature of Nepali people, their friendly behavior and their hospitality for the guests are some of my best collections from Nepal. The language classes conducted by VSN has been very beneficial for me to communicate, it’s improving day by day!”

Candy and Jennifer from China

“Our teacher in China shared the experiences of her past students who had volunteered in Nepal. She convinced us to visit Nepal and volunteer. We are here only for a week but this one week stay turned out to be very productive. We are very happy to be received by the VSN family with care and attention. Our host family is also very helpful. Our one week started with a two days Nepali Language class with tours to the heritage sites of Nepal. After that we joined the Women center to help the women with their English. It was a lot of fun working with such enthusiastic and positive women. We helped them with spellings and pronunciation.

Thank you, Volunteer Society Nepal! As a group, we worked together and came up with different ideas for the women. We are very glad to be part of volunteering in Nepal through Volunteer Society Nepal”.
