Volunteer Society Nepal : The best experience for volunteers, the best value for Nepal.

Volunteer Vacancy: Field Hockey Players

Volunteer Society Nepal is looking for people who want to share their hockey skills and knowledge with our projects in Nepal. Volunteer Society Nepal has started a project together with volunteer Hellen, to educate and work together with a school in Kathmandu, Nepal. The goal is to teach girls at this school hockey and empower them through hockey!

Hockey Empowers Girls

There are lots of sports for boys but not really for the girls here in Nepal. Girls are often stigmatised and told that they can dance and sing, but not do sports. However, research shows that playing sports empowers girls, making them stronger and more independent.

UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri says:

“Sports can be a force to amplify women’s voices and tear down gender barriers and discrimination.  Women in sport defy the misperception that they are weak or incapable.  Every time they clear a hurdle or kick a ball, demonstrating not only physical strength, but also leadership and strategic thinking, they take a step towards gender equality.”

Therefore, Volunteer Society Nepal wants to show that there is a sport for girls that is fun and wants to attract volunteers to come and teach hockey, but also train the sports teachers at the school to teach hockey themselves.

What will I be doing?

As a volunteer you will:

  • Work with the local community and school to plan, coordinate and manage the hockey trainings
  • Teach hockey classes and transfer your skills to the sports teacher
  • Build networks and strengthen relations with the hockey network in Nepal and world wide
  • Help with further developing the girls hockey team through competitions etc.

What skills do I need?

You just need to bring your hockey skills. You need to be a pro-active person with lots of good ideas and energy to teach the girls and work with the local teachers. Of course, Volunteer Society Nepal will help you with this.

And last but not least: you will need to be culturally sensitive with strong interpersonal and communication skills and the confidence to create positive relationships in very diverse working environments.

What will be included?

Volunteer Society Nepal offers you a well-organized program for a small fee that includes the following:

  • Airport pick up and drop off
  • Food and accommodation from the moment of landing at the airport to the final day of your placement
