Cassandra’s Transformative Volunteering Journey in Nepal: Empowering Children with Intellectual Disabilities

At Volunteer Society Nepal (VSN), we are always privileged to host compassionate, skilled, and driven individuals from around the world who bring their hearts and minds to serve Nepalese communities. One such remarkable volunteer is Cassandra, a dedicated Clinical Psychologist trainee from Singapore. During her three-week volunteer program, Cassandra made an indelible impact at the Center for Children with Intellectual Disabilities, working hands-on with children and adults aged 10 to 30 facing neurodevelopmental and physical challenges.

In this in-depth blog post, we explore Cassandra’s contributions, her professional background, and the transformative influence of her work. Her story serves as a powerful example of how professional expertise and a compassionate approach can create meaningful change.

Cassandra is a Clinical Psychologist trainee from Singapore with a unique blend of expertise and passion. Her professional identity is grounded in evidence-based interventions, psychoeducation, and the development of mental health programs. She is committed to fostering psychological wellbeing through a holistic, culturally responsive lens.

With a solid academic foundation and practical experience in early intervention and special education, Cassandra stands out for her ability to integrate psychology, neuroscience, and wellness to support both individuals and communities. Her mission is not just to help individuals cope but to initiate systemic change that promotes mental wellbeing.

Her Mission in Nepal: Volunteering at the Center for Children with Intellectual Disabilities

From the moment Cassandra arrived in Nepal, she embraced her role with dedication and compassion. The Center for Children with Intellectual Disabilities is a safe haven for children with Autism, Global Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Speech Delay. Cassandra was placed here as the primary key worker for children and adults aged 10 to 30, where she worked closely with local teachers, caregivers, and therapists.

Clinical Expertise in Action: Key Contributions

Developing and Implementing Individualised Education Plans (IEPs)

Cassandra was responsible for designing and executing comprehensive IEPs. These personalized plans included goal setting, reporting mechanisms, and daily curriculum planning tailored to each child’s unique needs. Her methodical yet adaptive planning ensured that every child had a roadmap for growth and development.

Conducting Cognitive and Neurodevelopmental Assessments

Using standardized tools and observational methods, Cassandra assessed children across cognitive, speech, and motor domains. These evaluations provided critical insights into each child’s abilities and needs, laying the foundation for effective intervention strategies.

Designing Evidence-Based Intervention Plans

Drawing on her knowledge of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and models like the ABC model, Hanen Programme, and PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Cassandra crafted targeted interventions. Her focus areas included behavior regulation, social interaction, language acquisition, and motor development.

Supporting School Transitions and Team Collaboration

Transitioning from specialized to mainstream education or other services is a significant milestone for children with developmental challenges. Cassandra played a pivotal role in planning these transitions. She coordinated with team members and maintained transparent communication with caregivers to ensure that changes were smooth, strategic, and child-focused.

Facilitating Caregiver Engagement and Psychoeducation

Cassandra also led sessions for caregivers, equipping them with strategies to support their children at home. Her approach was empathetic, inclusive, and culturally sensitive, which helped bridge the gap between clinical best practices and local realities.

 A Volunteer with Multifaceted Strengths

Cassandra’s contributions extended far beyond her clinical responsibilities. Her calm and professional conduct made her a role model among staff. Her strengths include:

  • Proficiency in academic research and statistical analysis
  • Systematic reviews to support best practices in intervention
  • Excellent client communication and management
  • Deep cultural sensitivity and adaptability

Her ability to engage effectively in school observations and her analytical thinking contributed to meaningful improvements in program design and delivery at the center.

Cassandra’s Personal Fundraising Initiative: Honoring Dedication Through Action

Volunteering Journey in Nepal

Beyond her professional contribution, Cassandra initiated a personal fundraising campaign to raise funds for salary enhancement, well-being, and professional development of CCID staff. Her initiative reflects a deep recognition of the dedication and resilience of the Nepali staff who work tirelessly with limited resources.

The purpose of the fundraising:

  • Enhance staff morale and retention
  • Upskill caregivers and teachers with training in modern intervention techniques
  • Support sustainable quality care for children with disabilities

Thanks to the generosity of her network—including Dean Lee, Khoo Siew Hong, Jeffrey and Joyce Wu, David Ho and Lee Lai Mei, Yin Hong, Mark Yeow, Nathalie Tam, Jean Lee, Fabrice Reynaud, Sharon Chua, Vanessa Ng, Dwayne Peh, Cassandra Lee, Habibah, Alyssa Shahirah, and Karisa Sukamto—the campaign not only met but exceeded its goals. The funds have created a foundation for systemic change within CCID.

Why This Matters: The Bigger Picture

Nepal’s disability sector remains underfunded and underrecognized, despite the tremendous needs. The work done at CCID highlights the power of community-driven, culturally sensitive approaches to care. Cassandra’s volunteer journey exemplifies how international collaboration, when built on respect and evidence-based practice, can uplift local capacity and bring sustainable improvement.

 Bridging Cultures: Singapore Meets Nepal

One of the most inspiring aspects of Cassandra’s journey was how she merged international knowledge with local culture. Rather than imposing Western models, she adapted interventions to be relevant and accessible for Nepalese children and their families. This culturally responsive approach is what made her work sustainable and deeply impactful.

She also took time to learn about Nepali culture, build friendships with local staff, and explore the beautiful heritage and natural landscape of the country. Her humility and eagerness to understand her surroundings helped her connect more meaningfully with the children and community.

 Lasting Impact: Beyond Three Weeks

In just three weeks, Cassandra left behind a framework that local teachers and caregivers can continue to use. Her IEP templates, intervention strategies, and educational materials now serve as valuable tools for the center. More importantly, her empathetic approach instilled hope, joy, and confidence in both children and their families.
